Originally built in the 90s, the Parkwood Tavern has been one of the cornerstones of the local community for over three decades. And while a series of minor refurbishments has seen this Gold Coast venue updated throughout the years, Parkwood’s favourite meeting place was in need of a revitalisation project that would transform the locale into a contemporary space for its diverse demographic spanning hospital workers, families and students.
Carried out by Cayas + Ward, one of Australia’s leading commercial architecture firms, the rejuvenation project took gentle cues from the Ballybunion Park, a lush, eucalyptus-filled reserve the venue backs onto. The design team – with Marina Bacha, an Interior Designer at Cayas + Ward, at the helm, curated a warm palette anchored by a splash of green which was brought in through the elements of the fit-out, and the foliage incorporated throughout the venue.
The selection of textures further enhances this connection with the outdoors, and ForestOne's EGGER laminates and panels play a pivotal role in establishing that conceptual dialogue. The products are highly durable and scratch resistant, with anti-bacterial (ISO 22196) and antimicrobial (HA 890247-Z) properties as standard, making them an ideal choice for the high-traffic hospitality setting. At the same time, the broad choice of finishes – boasting a beautiful selection of woodgrain textures, like the Natural Hamilton Oak H3303 ST10 laminate used throughout the interiors – enables designers to achieve a classic timber look, without compromising on performance or longevity.
At the Parkwood Tavern, the pronounced visual language of the Natural Hamilton Oak has been further enhanced by the 18mm Eurodekor panels which bring the same authentic character to the banquet seating, shelving and planter boxes throughout the space. Providing a point of counterbalance, a deeper and more atmospheric shade of EGGER Black U999 ST19 laminate brings a sense of practical refinement to the banquet seating, as it fuses the sophistication of a timeless, dark finish with the latest in surface technology. Similarly, the venue's triangle screen boasts Black PerfectSense U999 PT 18mm panels, alongside the Natural Hamilton Oak H3303 ST10 and Apricot Nude U232 ST9.
While ensuring practical benefits – like scratch and stain-resistance – this carefully curated palette not only augments the connection to the outdoors, but also enhances the welcoming ambience of the newly refurbished space. “Finishes throughout the Parkwood Tavern help to encompass the warm and welcoming feeling of gathering with family and friends,” says Kellie Cross, Specification Area Manager at ForestOne. “Considering durability and the life cycle of products, Cayas + Ward have created a timeless space for people to gather and connect. Through warm colour schemes and natural wood-based products from EGGER, the revitalisation of Parkwood Tavern enhances guest experiences.”
Apart from the high-quality profile, exceptional performance and stunning finishes, ForestOne’s EGGER products boast impressive environmental benefits, too. With the ambition to establish themselves as the leading supplier of sustainable joinery and interior building products in Australia, ForestOne only works with suppliers who share their environmental, social, and governance values. EGGER, with their mission of “More from wood” is a fitting, like-minded partner, helping architects and designers achieve their own sustainability aspirations.
“With 65% recycled content in the EGGER Eurodekor panels and a -13.8kg CO2/m2 carbon footprint, the sustainability of the joinery in the Parkwood Tavern is higher than most,” Kellie sums up enthusiastically. “To achieve stunning joinery designs you do not have to compromise on sustainability with ForestOne’s EGGER.”
To cap it all off, EGGER Eurodekor panels boast an extraordinarily low (0.3mg/L) formaldehyde content – one of the lowest in the particleboard and MDF categories in Australia. This enabled the Cayas + Ward team to prioritise wellness as well as sustainable outcomes – and ensure that the Parkwood Tavern takes cues from the outdoors when it comes to the colour palette and air quality in the bid to create comfortable and healthy interiors for their patrons.
