Built in the 1990s, the warehouse was originally the headquarters for local surf brand Quiksilver. Synonymous with the local community, the brief was to create a vibrant food and beverage hub within the warehouse, while seamlessly integrating brewery equipment as a showcase of Sou’West’s crafted approach.

The humble brewing ethos of the brand saw Ewert Leaf curate materials that reflect natural tactility and warmth, which are acknowledging of coastline and water. Earthen tones of terracotta, terrazzo, timber and leather are playfully intertwined to strike a balance between robustness and comfort, approachability and detail, while the inclusion of palm-print upholstery is a playful nod to the warehouse’s surf-wear origins.

The brewery features a beer hall, play area, tasting pavilion and open-air terrace. A 12-metre skylight allows for natural light to permeate the spaces, increasing the sense of warmth. A number of alterations were made to the building to increase cohesion, with the removal of an upper slab and extension for the various brewing instruments made by the practice in order to showcase the industriality of the warehouse.

The interior reflects the thoughtfulness of the brewing process undertaken by Sou’West, with bolster-style backrests finished with powder coated frames and timber end capping, with terracotta floor tiles adding texture. Landscaping, assorted furniture arrangements and suspended canopies provide variation.
