Zurich architecture studio, EM2N has used three dimensional cement modules to clad the city’s new railway service facility.
EM2N was employed by Swiss national rail company SBB to develop the 13,000 square metre building, which is used to accommodate and service trains of up to 400 metres in length.
The brief required the building to be visually engaging while responding to strict specifications that determined the dimensions, layout and materials.
Em2N decided to create a textural pattern on the building’s exposed southern façade, using a system of modular elements made from fibre cement to create an undulating effect.
The modulation extends across several elements but has been cut flat at either end of the building to frame the huge entrance doors.
