Boral Roofing has announced the winners of its third Design Award, A Different Pitch.

Winners include:

• $500k to $1m Build Cost: Frank Minnaërt (Sydney) for ‘Operative Roof’

• Under $350k Build Cost: Universal Design Studio (Melbourne) for ‘Ternary Residence’. Project team: Mark Simpson and Pip McCully

• Highly Commended: Jean-Paul Rollo Architects (Melbourne) for ‘Origami House’. Project team: Jean-Paul Rollo and Romas Kesminas

• Student Category Winner: Joseph Lombardo & Lucy Carse (University of Canberra) for ‘Conveyor Belt House’

The 2008 Award was expanded to incorporate two construction cost categories for a more equitable comparison: an under $350k build cost; and a build cost between $500k and $1 million for more aspirational designs.

Manipulation of light was a universal theme of the winning entries, with sun control and natural ventilation key design features that demonstrate the adaptability of roof tiles to passive solar design principles.

The challenge for the jury was to find a balance between roofing innovation and realistic possible outcomes for a modern Australian home.

It noted that Frank Minnaërt’s entry Operative Roof shined for its “series of undulating parasol roof forms allowing light to penetrate where required and facilitate air movement. Its system of programmatic stripes in turn divide the internal spaces and swimming pool.”

In the lower build cost category, Universal Design Studio’s Ternary residence features three elements: a primary pavilion, a secondary pavilion and an inclined perimeter wall. Each of these forms was entirely clad in Boral’s Terracotta Shingle, leading to an asymmetric incision for light at the apex of each pavilion.
