MakMax Australia has collaborated with a team of architects in the expansion and upgrade of Mumbai’s Domestic and International Airport terminals.

The project required the architectural team to transform the current hurried passage to and from drop off point/taxi queue/car park into an elegant, spacious gateway that was visually interesting while providing protection against Mumbai’s extreme weather – especially monsoon season.

The architectural team created a high-tech tensile membrane design that reflected Mumbai’s wealth and sophistication while providing practical functionality. The steel weight of the tensile membrane structure for the Departure canopy was reduced from 200 tonnes to 110 tonnes.

The architects chose to use flexible PVC fabric over a solid material due to the large space that needed to be covered. The PVC fabric also provided an enhanced design flexibility as well as aesthetic appeal.

The expansion and upgrade of Mumbai Airport had won the architectural team the 2008 ACASPA Award for Excellence in the Tension Structure category and was also declared the overall winner in the 2008 ACASPA Award for Excellence (Australia).
