Hired truck-mounted attenuators were recently used to enhance safety on a major upgrade of the M2 motorway in Sydney’s north.

Equipment hire company, Kennards Hire , which has a network of specialist traffic control equipment branches across Australia, supplied the four attenuator units.

The M2 upgrade will see the motorway widened to three lanes in both directions and involves work in several zones at the one time.

Altus Traffic was awarded the traffic management contract and will use the truck-mounted attenuators to ensure extra safety behind traffic controllers engaged in lane changes and other duties. Traffic controllers, wearing safety harnesses, work from new drop-deck trucks, which Altus Traffic designed specifically for the project.

Jay Crane-Gardiner, NSW-ACT operations manager said the company’s “Traffic devices are deployed from the drop-decks of moving trucks, combining greater safety and productivity, in this initiative, which is the first of its kind in traffic management in Australia.”

“The attenuators are a vital part of the safety management regime. Safety is our number one priority and we are proud to hold ISO 9001 Quality and OH&S AS4801 Occupational Health & Safety Accreditation throughout our national network of depots.”

While Altus Traffic had been operating in other states since 2002, it moved into NSW less than two years ago.

“With business increasing every month, Kennards’ equipment is a valuable resource we can draw on, and the two companies have joined in a mutually beneficial partnership to
enhance safety in traffic management.

“We also hire a lot of other plant from Kennards, including lighting towers, VMS boards and arrow boards,” said Jay.

More information of the attenuators used is available from Kennards Hire.
