Glasshape manufactured and supplied laminated bent glass for the railing and circular staircase at Memorial Hermann Healthcare’s The Woodlands Medical Center in Houston, Texas, USA.

The recently completed South Tower expansion has added a total of 351,636 square feet to the hospital’s campus. The project has increased the hospital’s total bed count for patients to over 500 from its previous 397; added 10 new operating rooms; and expanded the hospital’s endoscopy centre, heart centre, emergency centre and diagnostic imaging facilities.

JLL was selected to provide program and project management for the construction of this significant project, with Austin Commercial Services serving as the general contractor, PhiloWilke as the architect and SSA as the engineer.

Glasshape partnered with Berger Iron Works, Inc. once again, initially providing them with digitally scanned field measurements of the overlook railing and circular staircase structures during the construction phase. Glasshape went on to produce a 3D CAD model of these structures, referencing the point cloud data captured in the field measure to ensure accuracy in the production of the 14.28mm TemperShield laminated bent glass that they supplied Berger Iron Works.

“Berger Iron Works, Inc. has been using Glasshape for years and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. Their team always quickly responds with pricing, lead times, and status. The quality of the product is second to no one. The ability to scan the existing structures to back-check glass shop drawings to avoid schedule delays later in the project is imperative on the level of projects we work on,” said Samantha Neil, chief estimator, Berger Iron Works, Inc.

The finished bent glass installation, situated in the main entrance to the South Tower, provides a welcoming, light-filled environment and safe access point to The Woodlands Medical Center, which both Glasshape and Berger Iron Works Inc. are extremely proud to have worked together on, further cementing our joint commitment to providing excellent products and services to our customers.

“As a testament to the resilience and dedication of everyone involved, the tower has endured a variety of significant environmental setbacks, including enduring hurricane season, the pandemic and, most recently, Winter Storm Uri,” said James Selmser (JLL). “We’re proud of this project and know that the world-class employees of Memorial Hermann will provide exceptional patient outcomes.”
