A 10 day installation period and the requirement for an SR1 flatness rating were two of the key challenges facing Flowcrete when it secured the flooring project for an indoor sports stadium in Malaysia. Using a combination of two of its specialist floor finishes, combined with a tailor-made technical solution, the company was able to complete the installation at the Nilai stadium on time and with spectacular results.

After preparation of the 2300sq m floor area, a levelling screed, known as Isocrete K-Screed, was installed at the thickness of 50mm. K-Screed can be laid bonded, unbonded or floating and forms a strong base for floors where high traffic is expected. The challenge within the tight ten daay timeframe was to not only install the floor to the required flatness rating but to ensure that the screed was dry enough to receive the second system, Flowshield, a resin floor finish.

“The drying time for normal sand and screed is 1mm per day per square metre,”says Desmond Sin, director of sales for Flowcrete Asia. “At 50mm thickness, this would have taken 50 days, time that we didn’t have. By using our semi-dry cementitious K-Screed we were able to minimise the moisture content of the base. In order to speed things up further, we followed this with an application of Flowcem, a cementitious, modified epoxy DPM (damp proof membrane) system.” This enabled the 2mm topcoat of self-smoothing Flowshield to be installed immediately.

Flowshield is an epoxy resin self-levelling flooring that is hard-wearing, abrasion-resistant and easy to clean and is available in gloss or matt finish.
