Woods Bagot top Sydney heritage building with 74-metre copper clad tower

Woods Bagot have submitted a Stage 1 Development Application with the City of Sydney for a 22-storey hotel that will rise out of a century-old former meat packing building on the city’s busiest street.

757 – 763 George Street is currently the home of the heritage-listed 'Sutton Forest Meat' (SFM) building that was built in 1895 and is now occupied by the Malaya Restaurant.  Woods Bagot plan to add a 50-metre tower element to the top of the existing building and three basement levels below for carparking.

The façade of the SFM will be retained, while its interior will be reconfigured to incorporate dining, function and bar facilities as well as the hotel reception.  A total of 207 suites are planned for the hotel tower which will top out at approximately 74 metres.

While only at a Stage 1 application, preliminary renders of the Woods Bagot design show they will go down the path of copper, concrete and glazing for the building’s façade material palette.  Copper window reveals, sun fins and soffit detailing add warmth to the building which is otherwise a predominantly glass and precast structure.

A pool and landscaped area has been proposed for level two and drawings show a massive nine-level green wall planned for the back of the building.

The development has a circa $39 million price tag and is currently in front of the City of Sydney’s planning officers.
