The Sydney Opera House is seeking to appoint a First Nations expert to its 10-member Conservation Council, ensuring First Nations voices are central to heritage and conservation decisions at one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks.
The Sydney Opera House is searching for a heritage management expert to bring First Nations perspectives to the Council’s discussions and decisions.
"The Opera House is committed to First Nations voices and culture being central to our identity and future. We are seeking a First Nations heritage leader to join our Conservation Council and to support us in the cultural care of this extraordinary place,” says Sydney Opera House Acting CEO Kya Blondin.
The Opera House takes seriously its role to lead and inspire positive change, with sustainability and social impact embedded in everything it does.
This includes its commitment to respecting, celebrating and amplifying First Nation’s voices and culture across all areas of the organisation.
The Conservation Council advises the Opera House on heritage and conservation matters, guided by an overarching framework that includes the Conservation Management Plan, Utzon Design Principles and Heritage Action Plan.
Members also oversee the implementation of this framework in Opera House operations, including the staging of events and activations, storytelling, and caring for and maintaining the building and site.
The Sydney Opera House is a globally recognised symbol of Australia, synonymous with creativity and inspiration, one of the architectural wonders of the 20th century, the nation’s most visited tourism destination and among the world’s busiest performing arts centres.
For generations, Tubowgule, the land on which the Opera House stands, has been a place of gathering and belonging. Its traditional custodians, the Gadigal, would meet on the tidal peninsula to eat and share stories and culture. The Opera House carries on this legacy of gathering and storytelling, and embraces and celebrates the culture of Australia’s First Peoples.
