Australia’s Rob Mills Architecture and Interiors has been awarded ‘Interior Practice of the Year’ at the World Interiors News (WIN) Awards.
A spin-out from the World Architecture News Awards, the WIN Awards showcase exemplary interior design from all over the world and, in 2017, showed a particular liking for the work of director Rob Mills and his team.
Mills accepted the prize on behalf of his team at a ceremony in London’s Design Museum on 23 February and says that he is honoured to receive the international recognition.
“Being a WIN Awards winner, or even making it to the shortlist, is a remarkable achievement,” he notes.
“It’s something all the designers featured in this celebratory compilation should be truly proud of; because each of our distinguished and discerning judges is appointed under the strict criteria of reputation, expertise, and their passionately held views on what constitutes excellence in design.”
Rob Mills Architecture and Interiors were the joint winner of the ‘Interior Practice of the Year’ with Dutch firm, I29 Architects, and capped off a very successful campaign for Australian design firms at the 2016 WIN Awards.
In total, seven Australian projects were amongst the 19 category prize winners announced by the program’s organisers, including works by John Wardle Architect, Tom Mark Henry, Joanne Motee and Studio Gram, as well as lighting designers Ramus and Electrolight.
Nearly 600 submissions from 459 companies across 53 countries were received for the 2016 WIN Awards program.
Hannah Carter Owers, Director at Universal Design Studio and member of the Awards’ judging panel said that the work Mills and his studio, which includes the recently acclaimed Carrical House and One Hot Yoga & Pilates Sydney projects, shows a real sensitivity and beauty.
“There are lots of considered details; these spaces have depth and a sense of permanence,” she explains.
“There is also a real liveliness in the projects, a lot of that has to do to with how the light plays off the materials and the use of colour with just enough layering and level of styling to create alluring spaces.”
