On the 7th May 2010 AAMI Park was officially opened and hosted the Australian v New Zealand VB Test Match.

A 2.5m wide synthetic grass perimeter run off on all sides of the pitch was installed by TigerTurf .

As part of the finishing touches to the ground TigerTurf installed their FR65R sand and rubber infilled synthetic surface on the pitch surrounds. Pitch surrounds can experience a lot of activity are subject to extensive foot traffic. TigerTurf’s FR65R synthetic grass offers superior wear and tear to natural grass and features added support by way of the 10mm rubber shockpad underneath the synthetic grass. The system conforms to International Rugby Board (IRB) standards.

The Gold Coast Robina Stadium in Queensland is home territory for the Titans rugby team and they too opted for the same synthetic grass system for their side line a few years ago.

AAMI Park will be home to A-Leagues Melbourne Victory and new team Melbourne Heart, National Rugby's League's Melbourne Storm and the new Melbourne Super 15 team, Melbourne Rebels.
