Supaslat Maxi light weight beams from Supawood Architectural Lining Systems helped achieve acoustic benefits during the refit of the Duke of Gloucester bistro in Randwick, NSW.
A prominent historic landmark hotel in Randwick, the Duke of Gloucester recently decided to renovate their upstairs bistro and dining area. A key requirement in the client’s brief was to retain the character of the old building. Heavy timber beams were required to blend with the period timber and stone theme but cost and logistics presented limitations.
Supaslat Maxi was therefore chosen for the project for its aesthetic appeal and light weight construction.
Numerous unsightly services above the ceiling however created challenges and needed to be concealed without impacting accessibility. Steve Lundy of Lundy Building Services, an approved Supawood installer suggested using Supabab black acoustic textile to black out the ceiling above the beams.
Supabab also offered the additional benefit of being acoustically absorptive, eliminating the considerable street noise emanating from the traffic on the adjoining street, which the bistro patrons had come to accept as the norm. Using Supabab dampened this unwanted noise, increasing patrons’ comfort.
Following installation the improvement in acoustic quality far exceeded expectations with laboratory testing showing that the Supaslat Maxi with Supabab system offered a noise reduction coefficient of 0.85, one of the highest available in the market.
The bistro owners have decided to redo the ceilings downstairs using the same system.
