Street Furniture Australia supplied two products for the new public bus shelters opened in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

The Sharjah Roads and Transport Authority (SRTA) created 28 air-conditioned public bus shelters in the city to help commuters travel comfortably in the summer heat. The new shelters have been opened as part of a plan to create 172 solar-powered bus stops with an investment of around AUD6 million. The locations were chosen following a study by the SRTA to identify the most crowded areas frequented by public transport users. The new shelters are expected to benefit 176,000 passengers.

Street Furniture Australia has furnished the new bus shelters with their Mall Seats and Aero Leaning Rails, designed to offer passengers a place to rest, and accommodate up to 15 people at a time.

Abdulaziz Al Jarwan, director of transport affairs with SRTA, said they were planning to build more air-conditioned bus shelters all over Sharjah to meet the needs of the increasing number of people commuting in buses.

The bus stops are being built on the directives of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
