A 3D printer from Stratasys is helping an architectural modelling firm based in Seoul, Korea to execute complex modelling work for their clients.

Providing their services to several South Korean architectural firms, Modelzium was using conventional manual techniques and CNC machines to produce architectural models. The limitations of these manual methods forced the firm to compromise on the finer details of modelling, such as spheres, oval shapes or thin parts.

Yang Ho Park, chief executive officer for Modelzium explained that the limitations became more critical when South Korean architectural firms started making greater use of non-geometrical shapes with irregular contours. The company realised that manual modelling techniques not only prevented scalability but also limited their growth.

Particularly impressed by the fine details and smooth surface finish of the printed models created on Stratasys Objet Eden350 3D printers, Modelzium decided to purchase a system. According to Yang Ho, the price was also quite attractive.

Following the installation of the 3D printer, Modelzium staff is finding the machine easy and convenient to use, and utilises it for all jobs, including parts that can be easily done by hand. Where they had to rely on skilled CNC engineers in the past, the staff can now use the 3D printer with very little training.

Modelzium has been able to substantially reduce model production costs by 30 to 50 percent. The Objet 3D printer has also improved model accuracy and detail, which are important requirements in complex designs.

Compared to the previous CNC method, model turnaround time has been reduced by 30 percent for simpler designs and 50 percent for more complex designs, enabling Modelzium to deliver complete architectural models during the early stages of their customers’ design process and follow up quickly with multiple model iterations.

Yang Ho concludes their new 3D printing capabilities provide them with a competitive edge.

A leading manufacturer of 3D printing equipment and materials, Stratasys helps architectural firms seize more opportunities by creating complex, durable models in-house, directly from CAD data.
