Smoke Control  installed Metashield lateral fire shutters to fire separate two large rotunda openings at the Royal Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.

Smoke Control’s Metashield lateral fire shutters fully seal the curved openings when deployed in fire mode while remaining invisible during normal use of the building.

Installed in Australia for the first time, these lateral fire shutters protect the north opening measuring 14m x 3.4m and the south opening measuring 8m x 3.4m. The system was sufficiently cost-effective to supply in stainless steel.

Faceted fire curtains were found unviable for the curved openings, with the metal fire shutters considered ideal for a complete seal. A heel guard was also designed and implemented since the opening was a high volume thoroughfare. Additionally, since the area was open to the outside, the function of the system against wind velocities was also considered in the design and installation.
