To integrate a modern structure while remaining appropriate for a building with so much history was the brief for the renovation of the Duke of Wellington Hotel in Melbourne.

Established in 1853 - Melbourne’s oldest hotel - and recently renovated, it is one of the most iconic pieces of commercial architecture in the city.

At its core, a distinctive staircase from S & A Stairs marries the history of the building with a contemporary feel.

Exposed brick walls combined with colourful floor coverings work very well with the natural timber finish and steel balustrades of the stair. It complements the new and contemporary bar, restaurant and function facilities, while still acknowledging its iconic status.

The black steel balustrades and American Oak and Pine timbers create clean lines, achieving the modern, contemporary look. Timber elements bring warmth and character to the structure.

Extending over four levels the staircase adds understated detail and character to the hotel and bar. It is truly captivating and illustrates both the technical details and the beauty of stair design.
