Krause Emperor bricks from Robertson's Building Products Pty Ltd were selected for the external walls of a home in Carlton to seamlessly blend into the neighbourhood.
Wilson Tang of Sonelo Design Studio had two clear design objectives in his brief when he began work on the Carlton home project. Given that the house was a small terrace in the inner city, space was at a premium, both inside and out; the architect, therefore, had to incorporate elements that would create a sense of spaciousness and light within. The second objective was for the home exterior to seamlessly blend with the adjacent, snugly fit buildings and the Victorian era streets.
Driven by his client’s strong wish to use bricks, Wilson recommended Krause Emperor bricks for the external walls and courtyard. These stunning bricks in Grampian Blue beautifully complement the red brick of the adjoining building, along with the bluestone cobble in the rear lane, perfectly suiting Carlton’s Victorian era streets. The biggest selling point for Wilson’s client was the fact that the Emperor bricks were locally made by Krause Bricks in rural Victoria.
Having used them before, Wilson comments that the bricks stand out for their unique size; at 45mm high and 370mm long, these bricks have a special quality about them, almost like stone.
The impressive exterior brick walls of the terrace home draw the attention of people passing by, adding that genuine ‘wow’ factor to the final design outcome.
