Hawthorne House is a luxurious new five-bedroom home in Aspen, Colorado, USA offering expansive views of the Aspen and Shadow Mountains. Custom-designed by Poss Architecture + Planning and Interior Design, the residence exemplifies contemporary mountain home design despite the challenging constraints of a tight building envelope.

The linear form of the timeless design allows more spaces throughout the home to open up to the panoramic views. With the breath-taking Aspen Mountain in the background, the design focusses on creating a seamless connection between the indoor and outdoor spaces.

The architects have cleverly used natural materials such as Golden Dune Granite, New Pearl Limestone and Walnut to achieve the desired character for the contemporary mountain home, with the natural stone walls flowing effortlessly from the exterior to interior spaces.

Supplied by Rhodes Architectural Stone, every stone element is handcrafted to custom specifications, with a blend of hand-finished textures gliding from the outdoors to the indoors. Outside, Golden Dune Granite is featured around the reflection pond, and on the sunken water feature with solid blocks and hand-carved water channels. An oversized New Pearl Limestone wall veneer continues inside to a vast wall facing covering the three-level stair hall and surrounding the three-sided fireplace.

“The soft grey in the stone helps to create a serene environment along with the walnut wood flooring and panelling. The warm tones in these finishes were the backdrop to creating the furnishings package that all come together to create a cohesive design,” comments Melanie Grant, director of Interior Design at Poss Architecture + Planning and Interior Design.

Floor-to-ceiling glass has been generously used throughout the residence to frame the natural stone and also allow natural light to flood every room. The result is a light-filled residence, which beautifully showcases the natural surroundings.
