Afzal Laphir, Pryda’s Engineering Manager states that nailplate joined timber is an engineered product that is designed to be structurally adequate for its common uses. It should always be used in accordance with span tables published by Pryda or generated from Pryda Frame software. This software is distributed free to the building industry.
Afzal Laphir also points out that timber jointed products are not designed to be as strong as unjoined timber because in most domestic applications it doesn’t have to be. Allowable spans are often determined by deflection for roof/wall members or dynamic performance for floor members.
In a commercial reference, Pryda’s Victorian State Manager Kevin Labrooy, highlights that nailplate joined timber can provide cost savings for both builders and timber merchants alike. For the builder, the availability of long lengths allows smaller member sizes due to continuous spans. Deep beams up to 500mm can be manufactured for the benefit of builders dealing with heavy loads and large spans. The benefits of timber jointing to the timber merchants provides an economic means of utilising short lengths and narrow sections to make up the long lengths and wide sections required by the building industry. It is a ‘recovery operation’.
