OSRAM  energy efficient lighting products such as high-intensity discharge lamps, T5 and T8 fluorescent lamps and LEDs have been used in all of the ten stadiums being used to host world cup matches. Of all the components OSRAM will be supplying to South Africa, the LED-illuminated arc known as "The Arch" will be the highlight. The Arch features more than 12,000 Golden DRAGON Plus LEDs and spans the entire Durban stadium.

The Arch measures 350 meters long, weighs 2,600 metric tonnes and is 30 stories high and symbolizes the unification of some 70,000 sports lovers in Durban's stadium.

The German team’s first match will be held in Durban and the illumination will be provided by LED Beams which OSRAM developed in collaboration with the local manufacturer BEKA especially to meet the demands of the stadium. Just under two meters in length, the LED lighting is weather-proof and can be used flexibly. The installation and maintenance of the LED lighting components are carried out from a chamber inside The Arch.

Florian Hockel is the applications engineer responsible for this project and explained, "Accentuating this exceptionally imposing structure with our LEDs was a great challenge. The impressive result is sure to thrill thousands of visitors."

OSRAM’ lamps will be used in the infrastructure sector, for instance to light the airports of Durban, Johannesburg and Capetown. Several suburban rail stations in Pretoria and Johannesburg and a 150-km-long section of a state road have also been equipped with OSRAM lamps.

OSRAM is represented in Australia by OSRAM Australia .
