Energy efficiency in buildings comes from preventing energy loss in winter and heat gain in summer that can happen through windows and doors. During the day, ordinary glass allows heat to leave or enter a home or a building. Replacing ordinary glass with Low E glass can reduce energy consumption and contribute to a more energy efficient building.

What is Low E glass?

Low E or low emissivity glass features a microscopically thin and transparent metal coating that reflects long-wave infrared energy. The coated glass helps reduce heat entering or escaping a building.

What are the advantages of Low E glass?

By reflecting heat, Low E glass helps a home or building stay cooler in summer and warmer in winter, reducing dependence on cooling and heating systems, thereby lowering energy consumption and achieving savings on energy bills.

Compared to ordinary glass, Low E glass reduces the amount of heat conducted through the glass by around 30%. Available in clear, toned and obscure options, or even incorporated in laminated glass, Low E glass offers excellent performance when combined with double glazing. Compared to standard 3mm glass, using Low E coating and a suitable frame can stop up to 70% of heat loss and 77% of heat gain.

Low E glass improves thermal efficiency by reducing glare, minimising UV fading of furniture and furnishings.

By reducing heat gain or loss, Low E glass increases the comfort factor in buildings without impacting the entry of natural light. Low E glass allows natural light through without radiant heat, maximising light and energy efficiency.

Toughened Low E glass assures safety and security while laminate Low E glass has an integral interlay that provides superior sound insulation.

Low E glass also improves U-value and SHGC (solar heat gain coefficient). Very importantly, it is also low maintenance as it doesn’t require any special cleaning.

The Australian Government has introduced several initiatives to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Installing Low E glass is one way to reduce your energy consumption and help reduce carbon emissions.
