Open-cell ceilings integrated with lighting were installed in the entrance and recreation areas of a new multi-generation home in Bad Zurzach, Switzerland.

Designed by Liechti Graf Zumsteg Architekten AG of Brugg, ‘Pfauen’ is a special kind of multi-generation home created by the municipality of Bad Zurzach in collaboration with the Emil Burkhardt Foundation in the Swiss canton of Aargau to meet the rising demand for care places for its senior citizens.

This generational house is home to people in need of care, and also functions as a day care centre for children. Conceptualised as a modern care institution, Pfauen provides its residents with comfort, a sense of well-being and safety, with the focus being on the individual human needs of each resident.

Completed in September 2019, the in-house bistro welcomes the general public too, transforming the Pfauen into a meeting place for both young and old, providing a space for sociable interaction between people of different ages.

durlum supplied the optimum ceiling lighting solution for this ultra-modern structure. The open-cell ceiling lends a stylish edge to the entrance and recreation areas. Arranged at right angles to one another, the gold-coloured powdercoated leaf-like panels create a sense of refinement and dynamism in this interior space.

The adjacent QUADRA single blade open-cell ceiling in the corridors blends into the concept with playful ease.

Both open-cell ceilings are integrated with PUNTEO-Q50 spotlights. Designed to cast light at different angles, these spotlights provide homogeneous illumination while the luminaires themselves appear to disappear neatly into the cell structure. REFLEXION Zurich was the lighting planner for the project.

Products used in the Bad Zurzach project included durlum’s special open-cell ceiling featuring 1.5mm thick aluminium panels measuring 1249x624 mm, with cell dimension of 312x312 mm and web heights of 400mm and 500mm; powdercoated in gold-gloss, IGP-DURA xal-Style 25 4201, covering 124 square metres.

The project also used QUADRA metal open-cell ceiling featuring 0.6mm thick aluminium panels measuring 1250x625 mm, with cell dimension of 62x62 mm and web height of 50mm, powdercoated in NCS S 7005-Y20R, covering 1070 square metres.
