Brisbane-based fabric tensile membrane company MakMax Australia is setting new standards of excellence for itself. By refining its business practices to reduce its carbon footprint, MakMax has received accreditation for the new Environmental (ISO 14001) standard.
MakMax – which has designed and installed fabric shade structures on numerous iconic projects – became certified after making changes to its production and transportation systems to reduce environmental impact.
These changes included waste reduction, grey water systems and even changing suppliers to allow for environmental improvements such as biodegradable bubble wrap.
Bernie Neylan, Managing Director of MakMax Australia explained that in order to meet the ISO standard and reduce its carbon footprint, the fabric tensile membrane company reviewed every aspect of its business practices. Their aim is to create a business model that is environmentally sustainable.
“To really make a significant, measureable difference to our environmental performance we took a whole of business approach, investigating waste disposal and transportation methods as well as the manufacturing process of our products,” Mr Neylan said.
Achieving the environmental standard is an exciting achievement for MakMax as it was not only a voluntarily investment, it was an accurate reflection of the standards it sets itself as a company and for its clients.
Mr Neylan said the company was initially exploring a new business opportunity which required it to be certified for Safety AS/NZS 4801, and through researching this accreditation the new environmental standard was discovered.
“We had already been ISO 9001 certified since 2003, so when I looked into the environmental and safety standards we saw that there were natural synergies with our business approach and achieving all three became our way forward.”
MakMax was recipient of the Outstanding Achievement Award at the 2010 Industrial Fabrics Association International Awards and recently achieved another benchmark by installing Queensland’s first fabric shade cover spanning two greens at Pine Rivers Memorial Bowls Club.
