The Ashfield Aquatic Centre in Sydney’s inner west is a contemporary new aquatic and fitness centre. Originally opened in 1962, the aquatic centre was redeveloped by the Inner West Council to create a mixed-use community aquatic and sports centre featuring nine dedicated spaces. The new aquatic centre is expected to be used by 500,000 visitors annually for a variety of fitness and community related activities.

The Council chose to rebuild rather than renovate the existing centre to ensure the best long-term solution for this community facility.

Designed by Brewster Hjorth Architects, Ashfield Aquatic Centre features a resort-like ambience with five swimming pools, a 1000-square-metre Technogym-equipped health and fitness centre, café, crèche, spa and sauna.

Bringing their extensive aquatic and leisure centre design expertise to the project, the architecture studio has thoughtfully designed the facility with fully accessible changing rooms, hearing loops for hearing impaired visitors, wheelchair hoists and ramps.

KingZip Linea, an architectural roofing system from Kingspan Insulated Panels was specified for use on the aquatic centre’s roof, which had bull nose detailing. Brewster Hjorth specified KingZip as it would meet the aesthetic goals as well as the construction and building performance needs for the project. KingZip Linea can be tapered or smooth curved to a five-metre convex, delivering design flexibility.

Kingspan KingZip Linea 400mm wide panels in aluminium were installed for the Ashfield Aquatic Centre project.

KingZip provides exceptional structural, thermal, acoustic and fire performance as well as long-term protection against the corrosive environment associated with an aquatic centre.
