Two heavy duty 240V concrete grinders from Kennards Hire were able to successfully remove line markings in the vehicular backstage area of the Sydney Opera House.

Simpson Building Group, which was carrying out a major building, electrical and mechanical upgrade of the area called Central Passage, the delivery and dispatch point for equipment and other goods at the Opera House, had to remove more than 300m² of line markings. The job had to be carried out at night to avoid disruption to events.

After a sub-contractor struggled to make progress with other machines, project manager Gerard Nellestein found the Kennards’ heavy duty grinder following a web search. A very powerful grinder in the 240V class, it attaches to a high-performance industrial vacuum unit.

Gerard explained that the heavy restrictions of the facility as well as a strict time schedule made them take over the job. The company hired one of the concrete grinders from Kennards at Penrith on advice from staff at the branch who were also in contact with the Kennards Hire Concrete Care division. The contractor subsequently picked up a second one from the Rydalmere branch.

Gerard points out that the concrete grinders were very efficient with their interchangeable discs allowing the unit to complete rough finishing or light sanding, which was perfect for areas on soft concrete and epoxy right through to areas reaching 40-50Mpa. The almost dust-free operation was a great advantage.

Night shift foreman Shane Clarke said that the two grinders allowed them to cover more than 20m² an hour. The dustless operation offers OH&S benefits while also reducing clean-up work. Additionally, the handle adjusts to suit the height of the operator.
