FIBA-DEK, a premium decking product from Innowood, was the material of choice for the outdoor spaces at the newly completed Jordan Springs Public School in New South Wales. Designed by GroupGSA Architects, the project was part of the NSW Government’s $6 billion investment into public school infrastructure that will deliver more than 170 new and upgraded schools to communities across NSW over the next four years.

While Innowood has traditionally been the chosen sustainable timber alternative for cladding, screening and lining applications at various schools, FIBA-DEK has become the preferred decking material with the focus on outdoor learning spaces underlining the importance of natural materials in landscape designs.

The project brief for Jordan Springs Public School had a significant emphasis on outdoor spaces, seeking an extensive decking area that connected the modern building design with the natural landscape. The chosen material not only had to provide a safe surface for students to move about and congregate but also needed to be environmentally and sustainably sound as well as sufficiently robust to withstand the day-to-day traffic of a public school.

Developed using the latest decking technology, FIBA-DEK features a patented dual fibre layer in a co-extrusion that dramatically reduces and restricts movement, which is a common issue in most composite decking products.

Produced by the EPD-accredited Innowood, FIBA-DEK also met the environmental and sustainable objectives of the brief.

FIBA-DEK has also achieved the highest wet pendulum slip rating thanks to the hardwearing 3-dimensional embossed pattern that does not affect coating adhesion over time.

FIBA-DEK decking helped realise the design vision for the outdoor spaces of Jordan Springs Public School, combining the performance and sustainable benefits with the striking look and feel of natural timber.

FIBA-DEK has now become the premium decking product that is being specified in schools along with many other Innowood products.
