The Royce Hotel on St Kilda Road in Melbourne went through a major remodelling project in 2017 when the ownership changed hands.

SJB Architecture was called in once again to redesign the hotel; the architecture firm had been engaged 10 years earlier for the first remodelling of the building. The Royce Hotel site has some interesting history – it was once Australia’s first ever Rolls Royce car showroom with the property having an idiosyncratic mix of Spanish Mission and 1930s architecture with delightfully conserved facades.

Havwoods supplied their Alabastro Chevron flooring to complement the overall feel of opulence and sophistication of the Art Deco period.

SJB’s director of interior design in Melbourne, Andrew Parr explained their reasons for choosing the popular Havwoods product:

“The decision to use Alabastro Chevron in our Royce Hotel project was based on a few elements - the corner hexagonal shape of the existing building fits perfectly with the chevron allowing the pattern to feel aligned with the perimeter wall; the lime colouring references the soft hues of the period; and the overall look harks back to the 1930s Art Deco style.”
