Over 200 square metres of Flowcrete Australia ’s seamless and sparkling resin flooring system, Kristalina, have been installed at Sydney’s landmark Concord Repatriation General Hospital, in the facility’s newly constructed Medical Education building.
The new $11.5 million centre represents a collaboration between the University of Sydney, the federal Government, and Concord Hospital. It has been designed to provide student doctors, nurses and clinical workers alike with a state-of-the-art learning facility.
The purpose-built structure includes a cardiac resuscitation training room, surgical skills laboratory, simulation centre and video conferencing suite – providing some 200 students with the very latest in technology and training equipment.
After failing to achieve a satisfactory polished concrete floor finish across the centre’s corridors and within student break-out areas, the client was open to finding a slip-resistant, decorative and hygienic flooring system that would achieve a uniform finish and represent the standards and quality of the hospital itself.
Kristalina is a highly decorative surface material containing a creative blend of pigmented and glitter flakes, which are scattered and sealed over a coloured epoxy resin base coat. The system delivers a hard-wearing, high-gloss finish and offers excellent UV resistance.
For the Concord Medical Education Centre, the Kristalina system was formulated in a special blend of coloured aggregates to deliver an attractive multi-toned grey finish. Following on from the installation of the Kristalina system, the entire surface was coated with a water-based polyurethane sealer in a satin finish.
The eco-friendly resin floor finish also hit the right notes in terms of the client’s environmental requirements. Not only is the Kristalina material solvent-free and low in VOC emissions but also delivers a wealth of lifecycle cost and efficiency savings.
