Popular global design competition Electrolux Design Lab has invited Australian design students to send in their entries for this year’s contest.
Now in its 12th year, Electrolux Design Lab 2014 calls on Australian design students to compete for a six-month paid internship and a prize of 5,000 Euros by submitting innovative design ideas for the future home. This year’s theme, Creating Healthy Homes challenges students to think about the issues that will impact society in the future.
The Thinking Ahead report by Electrolux estimates that 67% of the world population will be urban by 2050 and there will be 30 megacities by 2025. As a result, the world will face resource constraints.
Lyndon Craig, Electrolux Senior Design Manager Asia Pacific explains that homes will become more important with growing challenges in the urban environment. Design Lab is one way for Electrolux to build a culture of innovation with the competition receiving creative ideas that promote healthy and sustainable lifestyles within the theme of Creating Healthy Homes.
The design contest seeks ideas for products, accessories, consumables and services in three focus areas: Culinary Enjoyment, Fabric Care and Air Purification.
Taking part in the competition is simple and requires the participant to submit a description of an idea, a visual sketch illustrating the idea, as well as a description of the consumer benefits. The competition opens for entries on 1 March 2014 and the submission deadline for the competition is 6 April 2014.
Design students from more than 60 countries around the world are expected to enter the Electrolux Design Lab contest. The competition also gives young, talented Australian designers a platform to showcase their work on a global scale, leading directly to jobs and business opportunities in the design field.
The first prize of the competition is a six-month paid internship at an Electrolux global design centre and 5,000 Euros. Half of the previous year’s winners have continued to work for Electrolux after their internship period. The second prize winner gets 3,000 Euros while the third prize winner will receive 2,000 Euros. The public favourite chosen by online votes will be awarded 1,000 Euros.
The 2013 winner, Adrian Perez Zapata designed an automated cleaning system consisting of hundreds of flying robots, which clean surfaces by touching them with a drop of water.
