The six winning projects in the 2011 Intergrain Timber Vision Awards have taken design to new heights with their visionary use of timber.

The Intergrain Timber Vision Awards recognises and celebrates the valuable role of timber in Australian architecture and design. Awards were given out in various categories including Commercial Exterior, Commercial Interior, Residential Exterior and Residential Interior among others.

The award-winners were picked by a jury comprising of architects Nigel Bertram and Susi Leeton with Jason Anderson from Dulux Group.

Creeds Farm Living and Learning Centre (Epping North, VIC) by TANDEM Design Studio won the ‘Best Commercial Exterior’ award while the ‘Best Commercial Interior’ was awarded to Saffire (Coles Bay, TAS) by Circa Architecture.

Hills Plains House (Metcalfe, VIC) by Wolveridge Architects was named ‘Best Residential Exterior’ and Queenscliff Residence (Queenscliff, VIC) by John Wardle Architects claimed the title of ‘Best Residential Interior’.

The inaugural Young Architect award was won by 26-year-old Weian Lim from Matt Gibson Architecture + Design for his contribution on the design team of Kooyong Residence (Armadale, VIC).

The Australian public was also invited to select their favourite project from all the entries received through a process of online voting. The People’s Choice Award was won by Sanura (Tallebudgera, QLD) by Pouné Design.

According to the jury, while each project was distinctly different from the other, a winning strength shared by all was the incorporation of timber into each design to add value and showcase the versatility of the material.

Commenting on the commercial category winners, Nigel Bertram said that the winning commercial projects demonstrated how timber could be used effectively on any scale.

Of the residential projects, Susi Leeton said that the Hills Plains House moved them with its subtlety and honesty while Queenscliff Residence was a model example of how complementary materials can be combined to create harmony.

According to Intergrain Brand Manager Stuart McCausland, the awards celebrate buildings that inspire with creative timber design.

Intergrain is a leading range of timber finishes by Dulux, which also offers protective coatings, powder coatings, automotive refinish coatings, performance coating systems as well as paint products for interiors and exteriors.
