THE first stage of a landscaped, waterfront park is nearing completion at Lend Lease’s Jacksons Landing development at Pyrmont Point in Sydney. The park is located on the site of the former Cane-ite factory which was used by CSR for the production and storage of fibre board known as Cane-ite, a by-product in the crushing of sugar cane. Three enormous steel Cane-ite spheres were salvaged by Lend Lease from the factory to be used as historical interpretive elements in the park.

One of the 15t spheres was covered to create a giant green and gold soccer ball in support of the Socceroos during the World Cup in June this year. Lend Lease acquired the former CSR site in 1996 and the first stage of the park was completed last month. The remaining stage is forecast for early 2008, to coincide with the completion of Jacksons Landing’s latest luxury building “evolve” located at the park’s western end.

At 11.7 ha and boasting 700m of prime harbour frontage, Jacksons Landing is one of Australia’s largest waterfront redevelopments. It has been taking shape for the past eight years and is almost 70 per cent complete. When finalised around 2012, it will comprise 1,350 apartments, terraces, heritage warehouse conversions and town-homes, together with 25,000m2 of commercial and retail space.
