It’s been a tough year and you have earned that vacation. However, before you head out, here are eight helpful tips that will keep your home safe from intruders and give you peace of mind so that you can enjoy your break.

1. Buy a timer for your lights.

A dark house is a quick invitation to burglars to try their luck. So that your house looks like it is occupied even when you are away, invest in a timer and set the lights to switch on at the usual time. You can even get creative, and put timers in different rooms with staggered settings so that the lights switch on at intervals for a more realistic effect.

2. Keep your garden trimmed.

If your vacation is going to be longer than a week, give your garden the complete treatment before you leave, including mowing the lawn, pulling the weeds and trimming the hedges. An unkempt garden is an easy giveaway that no one is home. If you are going away for an extended period, consider getting a gardener to give your lawns a trim at regular intervals.

3. Get friendly with your neighbours.

When you are not home, it’s always good to have an extra set of eyes on your property. To show that you are home, your neighbours could even put your bins out, collect your mail, or park their car in your driveway.

4. Invest in a security camera or two.

Head to Bunnings and pick up a security camera system that connects to your Wi-Fi and can be set up through your mobile phone. You can even link these to an alarm system that triggers when the camera detects a burglar.

5. Lock up everything and double check.

Check all your doors and windows, and make sure they are locked and secure. A typical home has several entry points and it’s possible that a few may be overlooked. When was the last time you checked that utility room door? Or the garage window?

6. Reduce temptation.

Make sure that anything remotely valuable is not on display.

7. Be careful about your social media activity.

If you are active on social media, avoid announcing to the world that you will be away. Avoid the temptation of ‘checking-in’ at the airport, hotel or any place on Facebook because it’s also a great way of advertising that you are ‘not’ home. Save all your vacation stories and photos for later – after you get home.
