Ecoply structural plywood, available from Carter Holt Harvey , was recently used by Rory Toomey (architect with Environa Studio) to create a prominent feature wall for inner-city Detour Espresso Bar.

Toomey comments on his goal to combine function and form in this fit-out project; “Usefulness is very important to me as a designer. The feature wall at Detour serves multiple functions – noise deflection and diffusion of echo within the small space, baffling for concealed light fittings and storage in the ply bench seat.”

This Ecoply structural plywood is 17mm CD Grade was specified by Toomey because “it was affordable, attractive and good to work with. Plus only one face needed to be exposed (the smooth sanded face).”

Sustainability is important to Toomey, citing it as the key reason for continuing to use Ecoply plywood, despite the rise in imported options.

The natural, pale pine timber finish of Ecoply is becoming a visual signature for Toomey who has also used it for floors, joinery, built-in and loose furniture and to line an entire cabin.
