Design extraordinaire Maryann Schmidt, owner of Hunt and Design speaks to Brightgreen about her design process for the Willoughby renovation project.
Renovations come with a pretty unique set of design challenges. Can you tell us a bit about your process and how you approached the Willoughby project?
This project came about very quickly. The client had already started the work but soon felt overwhelmed with all the decisions and how much time it would take to put together. I met the client on a Friday and literally had 4 days to pull together the design and plans for the builder. It was a great process as it meant there was no time for doubt and procrastination!
Your website mentions the brief for the project was to create a stylish, modern family home that would maximise light. Can you tell us about the lighting design and how you achieved this?
The lighting design was a really important aspect to this home as it needed to be both practical, as well as ensure it created ambience for entertaining purposes and chilling out in the evenings. We achieved this with a selection of decorative lights over the dining area, matched with functional but uber cool, modern lights over the kitchen bench and classic LED downlights to complement the spaces.
How did you come to choose Brightgreen LEDs?
I’ve had my eye on the Brightgreen LEDs for a while now and was waiting for the right project and the right clients to use them.
The project features our T550 H Curve track light. What led you to choose track lighting for this space?
Thankfully my clients were really open to breaking the norm of having pendants over the kitchen bench and embraced the option of track lighting within a recess wholeheartedly.
What is your favourite part about this project?
The T550 H Curve track lights, which were featured in a black recess above the kitchen bench!
How do you think good lighting adds to an interior design?
It supports the overall design in its flexibility – allowing you to subtly illuminate a space or be as dramatic and as high impact as you like!
What and/or who are some of your design inspirations?
I find myself being inspired by other designers and stylists all the time on Instagram, but one of my favourites (who I feel can do no wrong) are Arent & Pyke. Their designs are so carefully considered and often break the ‘rules’ beautifully.
What projects are currently on your drawing board? Anything we should keep an eye out for?
I’m currently working on a project in Darling Point and Paddington, which are both very different but I’m excited to see it all come together over the next few months.
What tips do you have for people considering renovating their home?
Be brave, flexible and enjoy the journey!
Is there anybody else you would like to credit on this project?
I’d like to credit the builder – Martin from Schmidts Construction. I work with him and his team quite often and they are always a dream to work with!
