The new COLORBOND steel products from BlueScope Steel are now backed by a warranty regime that offers users significant benefits.

From 1 October 2013, COLORBOND steel products including COLORBOND Ultra steel, COLORBOND Metallic steel and Coolmax steel will receive warranty periods of up to 36 years when used in certain roofing applications. This maximum warranty period represents an increase of up to six years over the maximum warranty period offered for original COLORBOND steel.

The warranty periods applicable for architectural roofing panels using new COLORBOND steel, for example, have increased from ‘up to15 years’ to ‘up to 36 years’.

BlueScope's confidence in the new COLORBOND steel's durability is the result of its improved corrosion resistance compared with the original COLORBOND steel.

Where the original COLORBOND steel substrate was protected by a zinc and aluminium metal coating under the painted surface, the new COLORBOND steel's substrate has a patented coating with Activate technology that features the addition of two magnesium compounds into the zinc and aluminium alloy.

The strategically positioned magnesium causes aluminium in the metal coating to more actively protect areas of the base steel following exposure from cutting, drilling or wear.

BlueScope national field performance manager George Thomson said the new COLORBOND steel's improved corrosion durability has been verified through extensive accelerated and in-field testing in harsh Australian conditions. BlueScope has invested almost 20 years and $100 million of research and development in Activate technology. The new warranties reflect their confidence in the new COLORBOND steel.

Given the improved corrosion performance of new COLORBOND steel compared to original COLORBOND steel, BlueScope is able to explore the possibility of offering products in new open and unwashed applications such as solar shades, and solar cell and architectural panels.

BlueScope market manager - commercial and industrial, Manu Siitonen said customers who obtain a warranty can share in BlueScope's confidence in new COLORBOND steel's performance for the duration of their warranty period.

Mr Siitonen said the industry should always be mindful of warranty and compliance risks when specifying product. The COLORBOND steel warranty gives customers the peace of mind of local technical support.

He adds that COLORBOND steel meets the deemed-to-satisfy performance requirements of the National Construction Code, enabling customers to avoid related compliance risks simply by specifying COLORBOND steel.
