Structural plywood from Big River Group was specified for the $4.5m apartment tower project in Moonee Ponds, Melbourne, helping the builders save time and cost. ONE9 was designed by architect Nonda Katsalidis and based on the Unitised Building (UB) system, an advanced assembly line approach championed by the Hickory Group. The building was constructed by Vaughan Constructions.

The nine-storey apartment tower featured 34 units in single and two bedroom configurations, with each apartment using 20 sheets of Big River structural plywood flooring. Thanks to the UB construction system, the tower was completed in 5 days. To complete the project within the timeframe the build was divided into distinct segments. Each was manufactured in a quality controlled factory environment, transported to the site and then craned into position.

The tower was completed in full compliance with AS2269 and Building Code of Australia. Big River’s 38mm thick H2 treated CD structural plywood provided the flexibility and performance necessary to complete the project to schedule, meeting time and budget goals.

The 6 star energy-rated apartment project includes tiled balconies, split system units, kitchenettes installed complete with final plumbing and electrical services, and double glazed windows for thermal and acoustic performance as well as amenities such as a rooftop garden with BBQ, comfortable furnishings and lush greenery; grey water recycling, and solar hot water panels on the roof.
