Automatic Heating supplied nine 150kW Meridian condensing hot water heaters to Canberra’s Next Gen Health and Lifestyle Club to meet the facility’s hot water and heating requirements.

Located in the capital’s inner suburb of Lyneham within Canberra’s sporting precinct, the health club is the result of a public private partnership with Tennis ACT and the ACT government. The club offers some of the most advanced training facilities in the country, and features an impressive gymnasium with various training zones and fitness classes, indoor and outdoor pools and six squash courts. A luxurious spa and wellness centre is also available to members in addition to access to the Canberra Tennis Centre. Member amenities also include a restaurant, bar, business centre and crèche facilities.

The nine 150kW Meridian condensing hot water heaters commissioned by Automatic Heating for the club provide heating hot water (HHW) for the gymnasium and pools, as well as central heating across the facility. Operating at very high and constant efficiencies, Meridian condensing hot water heaters reach a net efficiency of up to 108.6 per cent enabling seasonal savings up to 35 per cent.

The cascaded Meridian systems also offered the perfect energy efficient alternative to traditional water heating solutions, given the limited footprint available within the plantroom and the HVAC system’s primary/secondary loop design.

The energy efficiency of the cascaded Meridian condensing water heaters was further enhanced with the installation of the cascade control system, which provides sequence control of multiple units with BMS feedback. This high level of control achieves an output range of 30kW to 1350kW as each unit has a modulation ratio of 1:5. The club benefits from the significant ongoing energy savings achieved with the Meridian systems, which respond and adjust intuitively to varying daily and seasonal heating demands.

Automatic Heating also supplied a number of Duraflex Forte expansion tanks designed to maintain constant system pressure in a closed loop system.

Key advantages of Meridian condensing water heaters include inbuilt pumps and flow and return headers reducing install time, plantroom space and installation errors; cascading design with BMS interface option saving plantroom space and providing sequence control of multiple units with BMS feedback; isolation valves allowing service or maintenance work to be carried out without disturbing the cascade arrangement; AGA Approved Type A Appliance eliminating need for individual approval inspection; and tower module incorporating a secondary pump and expansion tank designed to complement the water heating units.
