ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions Australia proudly announces that their Lockwood Brass Core range was recently honoured with a 2020 Good Design Award. The Good Design Awards program is one of the oldest and most prestigious international awards, promoting excellence in design and innovation.

The Brass Core range is the latest collection of Lockwood brass door handles, comprising of 24 new designs and encompassing one of the largest selections of compliant levers for access and mobility (Australian Standard AS1428.1).

The Brass Core range is made from a hardwearing and high-quality material that comes in a range of finishes including brass, bronze, white and copper among others. It’s stylish and functional, fitting seamlessly into any building.

“We’re very excited to be awarded the Good Design Award for the Brass Core range in the product design, hardware and building category,” said Malila Gabuardi Lopez, product manager of ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions.

“The Brass Core range was created with the intention to break the paradigm of what previously defined commercial door hardware. We wanted to deliver variety in attractive designs, inclusive for all users, and that could form part of the character of the building they are in.

“We know that if a building is going to be used by the general public, most door handles will need to comply with Australian Standards for access and mobility. A long-held perception is that compliance in door handles is synonymous to clinical or commercial with functional needs taking over style. We wanted to change that.

“The design approach involved a thorough understanding of the core needs a door handle fulfils to the user, the architectural space, and the elements that enhance the experience of use and accessibility.”

Conceptualised as a small extension of a building’s architecture, the door handle designs were created through well thought simple silhouettes that can adapt to broad architectural spaces and remain relevant throughout the building’s lifespan.

Observing that door handles bridged the gap between the user and the built environment, Lopez noted that the new range of attractive compliant door handles incentivised application more often than what was strictly required by regulation, helping promote inclusivity and create welcoming spaces.

Even from a manufacturing perspective, the Lockwood Brass Core range has been made as sustainably as possible with ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions ensuring that the amount of machinery and labour required was minimised while still allowing the range to be delivered in the same lead time as other compliant levers.
