Hospital design is a complex process. One of the key challenges when building a new hospital is to make it flexible. From inception to completion, a hospital needs to accommodate the latest medical technology and prepare for new medical standards and best practice that could emerge over the next 10 years.

The New Karolinska Solna Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden designed by Scandinavia’s biggest architecture firm, White Arkitekter, sets the benchmark for a new generation of hospital buildings.

The design brief for the project was to create a hospital that not only accommodated the very latest standards in radiology and operations, but also put patients first while nurturing an ongoing collaboration between healthcare and medical research.

ASSA ABLOY spoke with Jörgen Pell, an engineer at White Arkitekter about the project.
