Volcore, a mineral wool core panel from Askin Performance Panels was specified for the exterior cladding of the building extension constructed as part of the expansion project at Frankston Private Hospital.
To accommodate an additional 60 beds, three operating theatres and a day oncology unit, Frankston Private Hospital needed to be expanded with the extension also serving as the main entrance to the hospital.
The project required a Type A construction, non-combustible panel system that was aesthetically pleasing while working cohesively with the existing building.
Designed by Silver Thomas Hanley architects with Watpac as the builder, the new hospital extension features Volcore panels from the Askin Exteriors range. Askin Performance Panels manufactured, supplied and installed Volcore panels in Surfmist and Basalt colours, and a Silkline profile.
The back of the hospital was veneered entirely in the chosen panel system using the Askin concealed fix method. Askin also assisted with the specification, design, engineering for structural performance and building certification.
During the installation, accessibility was a challenge for Askin with limited access available via a narrow residential street at the rear of the hospital. Small cranes, speciality lifting and elevated platforms were employed to lift the lightweight panels into position with minimal disruption to the neighbouring residence.
Askin’s Volcore panels deliver multiple benefits including structural performance, weather tightness, thermal values and non-combustibility, all in compliance with the NCC for Type A construction.
Frankston Private Hospital’s expansion program is now complete and open for the benefit of the Frankston and Peninsula communities. The hospital’s extension has an NCC/BCA conforming fire performance exterior cladding system.
