Metal is a highly preferred material in retail design with many high street and luxury stores using it in various forms to create impactful window displays and capture the shopper’s attention.

Eye-catching entrances, wow-factor windows and dazzling displays are being created using perforated metal, and woven or welded wire mesh.

Arrow Metal Systems has put together a few tips for retail store design with real case studies – read them and discover how metal can help maximise your sales.

Retail store design tip 1: Make an entrance

When you are trying to get customers through the door, focus on spectacular entrances and window displays that draw the attention of passing shoppers and tempt them to enter and discover more.

Arrow Metal’s brass-effect golden coated perforated metal was used on the windows of luxury jewellers Golston’s new Sydney store as a sparkling reflection of the brand. The Arrow Metal team worked with project designers Loopcreative to bring the studio’s ‘lightbox’ window concept to life, giving Golston’s fine custom jewellery just the right light level to shine.

A project by Design4Retail for an Adidas pop up in London made effective use of wire mesh to capture attention. Wire mesh was used in the windows and the interior, creating a ‘modern, urban environment’ for the brand’s new hoodie.

Retail store design tip 2: Perfect the display

Visual merchandising helps to tell the brand’s story. An effective retail display is one that enhances and elevates the merchandise to become the focus of attention.

Bozarth Fornell’s design for the Acne store in Los Angeles uses perforated metal to great effect. Despite being a heavy feature in the overall store design, it acts as the perfect backdrop to the clothing, capturing the attention of shoppers.

Perforated metal can also be used for merchandise of a much smaller scale, thanks to the sheer scope of perforation design.

For Pandora’s brand new DO collection launch, the Arrow Metal team ensured the beautiful jewellery was the striking centrepiece of the retail display. Working with Jay Productions and Events, Arrow Metal created metal display stands, intricately perforated to reflect the delicate design of every piece of jewellery.

Retail store design tip 3: Open up the space

Customers are comfortable shopping in open spaces that give them sufficient room to browse, move around and consider a purchase. Wire mesh is a brilliant metal for this purpose; being so open, it instantly makes things less busy in the retail environment. The Camper store in Tokyo by Schemata Architects uses wire mesh to encase key pieces in its stock and showcase it at the same time.
