Translucent trafficable panels from Allplastics Engineering were used in an innovative application involving the transformation of a swimming pool space into a temporary multifunctional platform during winter.

Approached by SAAJ Design in Melbourne, the Allplastics Architectural and Building division supplied their scratch-resistant, anti-slip translucent lightweight STAGE 40 Pep Core panels for the application. A key objective of the client was to maximise the use of external spaces by making them multifunctional in design. For instance, in a place such as Melbourne, the use of a pool is reduced to the warmer months of late spring to autumn, leaving it completely unusable for the other six months of the year.

The solution provided by Allplastics Engineering involved forming the edge of the pool with a profile to accept coloured aluminium joists. STAGE 40 translucent panels measuring 2.0m x 1.0m from Allplastics (typically used for rock stage platforms) span across the joists. Along with the perimeter terrace and via two ¼ tonne steel glass ‘gates’, the pavilion connects to the pool creating an open floor plate measuring 14.0m long x 9.0m wide.

The trafficable platform created over the pool can be used during the non-swimming season for parties, mini tennis, mini basketball and junior bike riding among many other activities. The LED lighting beneath the translucent floor panels creates an amazing ambience. STAGE 40 panels can support loads up to 500 kg/m².

The translucent flooring is available in standard panel sizes of 2m x 1m x 40mm thick and the lightweight panels can be easily lifted by one person.
