Architecture students from the University of Newcastle have been tasked with designing a landmark contemporary arts space for Lake Macquarie.

The space will take the form of a cultural and community hub at Speers Point Park. It will include an arts pavilion with the potential to host multimedia exhibitions, contemporary installations, performance, music and community events. Macquarie City Council intends for the space to become a regional destination for artistic excellence and innovation.

According to UoN’s head of architecture, Dr Chris Tucker, this project will provide the students with valuable ‘real world’ experience. Design research is a critical and developing field, and a place where architecture and education meet, says Tucker.

The students’ designs will be judged based on their functionality, aesthetics, and incorporation of sustainable building principles.

The winner will be announced on November 15, 2018, with construction to begin in 2019.
