6 crazy cool cubby houses for the kids, designed by Australian architects

Kids Under Cover has put out the final call for expressions of interest from members of the building and design industry to participate in the Cubby House Challenge for 2016. Participants have to register their interest before 30 September 2015.

The national youth homelessness prevention charity, Kids Under Cover is urging building groups, designers and architects to participate in the popular event by going back into their childhood and designing the cubby house of their dreams. To be displayed at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show in March 2016, the cubby houses will be auctioned off to raise funds for Kids Under Cover.

Jo Swift, chief executive of Kids Under Cover explains that the cubbies are always a major drawcard at the Flower and Garden Show and the funds raised will contribute to the crucial work of the charity.

The Cubby House Challenge judging panel includes architect Peter Maddison, host of Grand Designs Australia.

Construction guidelines are available on the organisation’s website and include information on dimensions, weight limit, cantilevers, weatherproofing and safety guidelines.

All cubby houses must fit within a 2.5m x 3m (W or L) x 3m H envelope so that the new owner can install the cubby house in their yard without obtaining a permit. They will be built on a base supplied by Kids Under Cover so that the organisation can easily transport them by forklift.
