Friends and family of independent politician Ted Mack will gather in Sydney next week to pay tribute to his achievements in public life.
Hosted by North Sydney Council, the oration is likely to be attended by Mack who was diagnosed with multiple brain tumours last year and is currently being treated at Royal North Shore Hospital.
A popular mayor of North Sydney who went on to serve as an independent MP representing the lower North Shore at both state and federal level, Ted Mack was elected to the North Sydney Council for the first time in 1974. He was elected mayor of North Sydney by council vote in 1980, serving subsequent terms in 1981 and 1982, and then elected mayor by popular vote in 1983 and 1987.
In 1997, he was named one of 100 ‘National Living Treasures’ in an election by the National Trust.
The Ted Mack Oration is taking place at the Independent Theatre, North Sydney on March 23. It is being hosted by Sydney Morning Herald columnist and Associate Professor in the Australian Graduate School of Urbanism at UNSW, Elizabeth Farrelly.
