A long line-up of renowned experts in sustainable building, architecture and design will speak at this year’s Sustainability Live panel.

Held on 11 October at The Star in Sydney, Sustainability Live will take the form of six Q&A panels and one debate. Professionals who attend the event will be eligible for six formal CPD points.

We are proud to announce our expert line-up of panellists and moderators:

1. How a greener built environment is changing the way we live and work

What is the science behind this trend and can it be readily quantified? And how does what we do in Australia compare with our regional neighbours like Singapore, where there is a legally-mandated 40 percent green replacement policy in all urban areas?

Moderator: Daniel Ryan, lecturer at University of Sydney
Joana Almeida, senior sustainability consultant at Edge Environment
Elizabeth Watson Brown, director of Elizabeth Watson Brown Architects
Michael Smit, technical and sustainability manager at Kingspan Environmental
James Grose, CEO at BVN

2. What are the incentives for sustainability, and are we missing the bigger picture?

Should planning restrictions on dwelling size and typology be relaxed? Do we need more social housing and how will this help sustainability in the built environment? And what about new housing concepts?

Moderator: Jenny Edwards, director and scientist at Light House Architecture & Science
Lee Hillam, NSW government architect and co-director/principal design advisor at Dunn & Hillam Architects
Robert Pradolin, national program advisor at WoodSolutions Mid Rise Advisory Program
Philip Harrington, managing director at Strategy Policy Research
Kylie Mills, director at Australia Passive Housing Association

3. How is technology helping to promote sustainability, and are we missing the bigger picture?

On one end of the spectrum, some believe that with enough technological innovation and development, we'll figure out a way to solve our environmental problems. The other side believes we need to encourage only environmentally sustainable economic practices. Who is correct?

Moderator: Lee Hillam, NSW government architect and co-director/principal design advisor at Dunn & Hillam Architects
Adam Strong, group managing director at Strongbuild
Craig Hardman, country manager for Large-Format Design at HP
Dr Fred Moshiri, senior structural engineer at ACOR Consultants

4. How to eliminate all waste in a residential build

Troy Creighton, managing director of Stormtech
Troy Uleman, director of John McAslan + Partners
Robert Mansell, business development manager - commercial at Hyne Timber

5. The state of modern slavery in AEC supply chains: What are the solutions?

The United Nations estimates that more than 45 million people are entrapped in modern slavery across the world. Australian companies that work in the AEC industries can take steps to mitigate the risks of modern slavery, on their own sites and operations, and in their supply chains.

Moderator: Robin Mellon, CEO of Supply Chain Sustainability School
Nicole Thompson, senior sustainability consultant at Edge Environment
Jacqui Wagar, sustainability leader at Stylecraft
David Baggs, CEO and program director of Global GreenTag

6. Mental health and the built industry

Tim Horton, registrar at NSW Architects Registration Board
Mahalath Halperin, director of Mahalath Halperin Architects

7. DEBATE: Is our continuing population growth a help or hindrance to ensuring a sustainable built environment?

Australia's population growth and urbanisation affect virtually all development objectives, consumption, production, employment, income distribution, poverty and social protections. They also complicate our efforts to ensure universal access to health, education, housing, sanitation, water, etc. The question is, where are we really heading, and do we need to change directions?

Moderator: Jonathan Prendergast, director of Prendergast Projects
Troy Uleman, director of John McAslan + Partners
Dr Peter Tonkin, director of Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects
Robert Pradolin, national program advisor at WoodSolutions Mid Rise Advisory Program
