Chelsea Lehmann will be conducting a Masterclass, Painters’ Secrets at the Adelaide Central School of Art in July.

To be held over three days from 11 July to 13 July, the course will provide insights into the working processes of professional artists beginning with a lecture based on interviews with selected contemporary painters. The Masterclass is designed to give a broad overview of some of the processes painters employ in relation to genre, materiality and conceptual development.

The course will be conducted through four ‘workshops’ focussing on different aspects of painting:

1. Selecting and developing imagery - Strategies for selecting images with visual and conceptual interest

2. Material/ pictorial investigations - Technologies, media, painting techniques

3. Painting drapery - Ground colour, tonal analysis and paint handling

4. The portrait - Drawing the head, understanding planes, complex colour mixing (temperature/ saturation)

Each workshop will be of 3-hour duration; students will therefore not necessarily produce finished works but will focus on studies in order to develop new work that may be extended outside of the course. A journal is advised for collating practical and conceptual research and handouts will be provided to underpin some of the techniques explored.

Closing date for enrolment is 27 June 2014.

The Masterclass will be held in the School’s new air-conditioned studio in the Teaching and Studio Building, within the Glenside Cultural Precinct.
