The 2013 AIA New York Chapter Design Award winners have been unveiled, honoring 42 projects in the four award categories, Architecture, Interiors, Projects, and Urban Design. Each winning project was chosen for its design quality, response to its context and community, program resolution, innovation, thoughtfulness, and technique.

Changsha, China

Zaha Hadid has unveiled her firm’s latest project in China, the Changsha Meixihu International Culture and Art Center. The massive urban project, which broke ground in October, is a megaplex of twisting sculptural objects which centre around a public space and feed into three cultural centres: a contemporary art museum, multipurpose hall, and grand theatre.

Doha, Qatar

After winning an international competition, OMA has been commissioned to masterplan a new 10km2 Airport City for a population of 200,000, linking the new Hamad International Airport with the city of Doha. OMA’s masterplan is a series of four circular districts along a spine parallel to the HIA runways, intended to create communities with unique identities.

Paramount Pictures, a name synonymous with Hollywood movies, has announced its first endeavor into the world of architecture. Partnering with luxury real-estate developers DAMAC Properties and Paramount Hotel & Resorts, the company has released details of DAMAC Towers by Paramount, a cluster of four rippling towers in Dubai, joined by a multi-level plaza.

Six winners have been announced in a city-sponsored contest that called upon participants to revive 11,000 payphones located throughout NYC. The franchise contracts for the existing phones were signed in 1999 and are set to expire in 2014. The finalists all envisioned turning the outdated amenities into modern digital information hubs.
