Young designers, Steven Vidovic and Kristina Taranto have won the design commission for the People's Market which will be a sustainable pop up market to open in Melbourne in November.

The market will have a clear sustainable focus which will utilise shipping containers, recycled materials and greenery throughout and will be placed on a vacant carpark in Collingwood.

Vidovic and Taranto will use a range of recycled materials and plan to implement green roofing to reduce solar heat gain as well as harvesting rain water through PVC pipes to maintain the vegetation on site which will include vertical greenery.

Vidovic said that the main feature of the market will be a peoples garden which will have recycled timber, sculptural trees and a 'bottled wall' which will be illuminated at night to create an atmospheric space.

Recycled crates, old bicycle wheels and doors as tables will also serve a function in the market.

The competition stipulated that certain infrastructure had to be used to transform the 1100 square metres and these included:

  • 4 x 20ft Shipping Containers selling Hawker Style Street Food
  • 1 x 20ft Shipping Container Bar
  • 2 x COMA ((containers of modern art)) 20ft Containers
  • Up to 4 retail spaces — this may or may not include the use of refurbished shipping containers
  • Appropriate greenery throughout the site
  • Seating arrangements to accommodate up to 200 people at any one given time
  • Your design must make allowances for amenities and take into consideration that there needs to be enough space for a Saturday Pop-up market to operate, requiring up to 30 market stall spaces.

Vidovic said that the market will feature hawker style street food, retail spaces, live music, art installations and intertwining green spaces.

"It aims to engage with the Smith Street locals as well as publicly activate a neglected part of Collingwood," he said.
